148 competitors from around the world graced the links in early August, and were lulled into a false sense of security by calm sunny conditions for the practice days. The first two days of competition tested the players with some true links conditions of wind and showers, making scoring challenging over what is rightly renowned as a fair but demanding championship course. The final day saw the lead change several times as the round progressed, and after 54 holes, three players were tied for the lead.
A playoff ensued, and to the delight of the crowd around the 18th green, Chip Lutz holed a 30 foot birdie putt to clinch the title for the third time in dramatic fashion. He will now play in the British Seniors Open Championship 2017 and we wish him well.
Formby hosted the very first British Senior Amateur Championship and were delighted to host the event again for a record fifth time. It was also a delight to have Mr Peter Wilson, our Senior Past Captain present on registration, who was Captain in 1969, and who handed over the trophy to the very first winner. A momentous occasion.
