Formby hosted the 20th playing of this annual event, initiated by the “King” himself, Arnold Palmer. A Ryder Cup style format, between some of the best amateurs in the world, representing the USA and Europe, past players have now won over 100 tour victories worldwide, and include such names as Dustin Johnson, Ricky Fowler, Graeme McDowell and Luke Donald.
The very busy week featured a junior clinic, college-am competition, then three days of exhilarating golf, with foursomes and fourball matches on the first day, followed by two days of singles. After a close first day, Europe edged day tow, leaving the USA with a tough task for the final Sunday. A storming start brought them back into the match, but a very strong finish by Europe, led by Coach and former Solheim Cup player, Janice Moodie, meant they raised the trophy on home soil. As part of the event, European player Matthias Schwab, received an invitation to play in the Arnold Palmer invitational competition at Bay Hill on the USPGA Tour next spring. We wish him well and will be following his progress.
