Founded in 1884 a group of 24 local business men founded Formby Golf Club in 1884. As was usual in those early days in England, golf was played over a 9 hole course during the winter months between October and mid April. Formby was open to Members and their friends and Ladies, who were relatives of members. ![]() The first course. The land, which was part of the Warren and rented from a tenant farmer at £10 per season, lay between the recently extended railway to Southport (1851) and the sandhills and followed the pattern of golf course design created at St Andrews and Westward Ho! and the earliest local course of West Lancashire (1873). ![]() 7th fairway 1884 - 1900. The early days of Formby Golf Club are described in the history written by Ivor S Thomas in 1972. In this you will read that the Clubhouse grew from a shack to a substantial purpose built club - which burned down in 1899 - to the existing Clubhouse we now use. In this period the course was extended to 18 holes and Sutton's Farm, around which the course was played, was acquired to construct a course for Formby Ladies. The membership grew from 24 to 500. |
