The Hippo

The Hippo was one of many trophies which were shot in Africa by two brothers of Mr E Storey, a member since 1885 and one of the early trustees of the Club. It was presented to the Club by Mr Storey's widow shortly after his death in 1909, and has since been a prominent feature of the clubhouse. Well almost!

"The local Admiral, an ardent golfer and member of Formby Golf Club had heard the story. I was summoned and threatened with Court Martial. Having got that off his chest, the Admiral cooled and settled for the instant return of Hippo - and a personal apology to the Golf Club Committee from all concerned"

An extract from "CONVOY IS TO SCATTER" by Capt. Jack Broome, R.N. the full extract is sited near to the Hippo in the clubhouse.

The Hippo who went to war

The Hippo was kidnapped during the war years by the Royal Navy  serving for a brief period onboard the troop ship Veteran. Strapped to the searchlight platform the Hippo survived a trip under fire to Narvik, delivering troops to the Norwgian fiords
