The first course The land, which was part of the Warren and rented
from a tenant farmer at £10 per season, lay between the recently extended railway
to Southport (1851) and the sand dunes and followed the pattern of golf course design
created at St Andrews and Westward Ho! and the earliest local course of West Lancashire
(1873).
1884 - 1900. The early days of Formby Golf Club are described in
the history written by Ivor S Thomas in 1972. The book describes the development of
the Clubhouse from a shack to the substantial building which burnt down in 1899 through
to the existing Clubhouse in use today.
In this period the course was extended to 18 holes and Sutton's Farm, around
which the course was played, was acquired to construct a course for Formby Ladies.
