Formby Golf Club Championships
Formby has always regarded itself as a top amateur course however, it has been used as a
course for the Open Championship on three occasions (1924, 1971 and 1996).
The Amateur Championship has been held here on four occasions, the most recent being
2009. The winner Matteo Manassero is the youngest ever winner of the championship
at 16 years of age.

- Won by R Reid Jack (Dullatur) who beat Sgt H Ridgley (USA) in the final 2&1
- 1967
- Won by R B Dickson (USA) who beat R J Cerrudo (USA) in the final 2&1
- 1984
- Won by J-M Olazabal (Spain) who beat C Montgomerie (Ilkley) in the final

- 2009
- Matteo Manassero (Italy) beat Sam Hutsby (England) in the final 4&3.
The R & A has brought many other Championships to Formby
- 5 Boys Amateur Championships
- 4 Boys International matches
- 3 British Seniors Open Amateur Championships
- British Mid-Amateur Championship.
The English Golf Union have held five English Amateurs (1934,1949,1959,1973,1991),
three Brabazon Trophies (1951,1965,1998), one Carris Trophy (2000) and the English
County Finals six times (1926,1934,1949,1955,1979, 2003).
Other Championships include 7 Lancashire County Championships, 9 Lancashire Ladies
and 7 Oxford v Cambridge Varsity Matches.
The Ladies Golf Union, The English Ladies Golf Association and the European
Golf Association all recognise Formby as a major ladies venue.
The British Open Amateur and Stroke Play, the English Close and English County Finals
have all been held at Formby. Formby was also the venue for the first Ladies'
International European Amateur Championship held in the UK and in 2000 Formby was
used as the final qualifying venue for the Ladies British Open held at Royal Birkdale.
The 33rd Curtis Cup between the amateur ladies teams of GB&I and the USA was
played at Formby in 2004.
